Lily[]

Spirit, a wolf, walked through crystal sands, the sun warmed his fur. His friend, Juniper, shook his fur off as he got out of the water. "i got to go, Spirit. talk later!

"oh." Spirit sighed. Juniper was his only real friend. "okay. see you."

Juniper ran down the road to coral canyons, waving.

Spirit started walking back home, taking the short way through the temple of zios.

a rabbit hopped over beside him. "hi!" she had white fur and purple eyes, and wore a purple scarf.

"oh... hi." Spirit nodded half-heartedly. "i'm Spirit."

"i'm Lily."

"cool." Spirit mumbled.

"wanna play? best dressed, or scooped, or something? you look kinda down."

"uh..." Spirit hesitated. "i'm pretty tired. sorry."

"oh, okay." Lily gave him a patient, kind smile. "you should go through sarepia forest, though. It's lovely out today."

"mm." not really hearing, he continued walking.

ring[]

Lily sighed and hopped away. Spirit padded off and returned to jamaa. so many animals screaming. he opened the small door into his house and flopped down on his bed, ring slipping off his paw. tired, he fell asleep.

Spirit's room

***

when Spirit woke up, he slipped on his necklace, and reached for his ring.

it wasn't there.

his heart dropped. He liked that ring. it was the only expensive and pretty thing he owned, but it wasn't anywhere in his small den. Walking out with a bad start, he looked about jamaa.

juniper wasn't anywhere to be seen.

he spotted Lily and walked towards her.

Lily turned. "Spirit! hello."

"are you busy?"

"nope. what's up?"

the grey wolf sighed. "not much. lost my ring."

Lily gasped. "i'm sorry. wait here." and the white bunny bounded away, long ears flapping.

when the little rabbit returned, Spirit was sitting morosely on the road. he looked up. "hi."

Lily and Spirit

Lily took his paw and slipped on a ring. confused, the wolf lifted his paw to see a small turquoise ring with a black handle on.

he nearly started to cry. "what--"

"Well, i thought it matched your fur." Lily gave him a smile. "i teleported over to epic wonders and busted my money, but it matches your necklace better than that red ring. but if you find the red one, just chuck this one."

Spirit continued to stare at the ring. "i... But you just met me yesterday! Why would you blow all your gems to get me a ring?"

"so you'd smile." Lily stood on her tiptoes and brushed his neck fur with her cheek before bounding away.

thoughts[]

Spirit stood there for a moment, unsure how to react.

so you'd smile.

he hadn't thanked her for the new ring, even though she bought it for him

he hadn't been grateful for the new ring, even though she spent all her gems on it

he hadn't even smiled for her

he'd nearly cried about it.

she must hate me now. i'm such a terrible person. this is why I don't have any friends.

tears stinging his eyes again, Spirit walked across the road, heart heavier than ever.

he reached his house. it was still dark; there were no lights. he opened the door and stumbled almost drunkenly forwards, then tripped over a stack of books. they scattered everywhere and he pushed himself up, hardly registering the pain and bruises he'd get.

my house is so messy. i need to clean up. i never do. i'm horrible. if Lily sees this she'll hate me even more. i'm so tired...

his sword belt clipped on the top of a broken globe he had near his bed and it ripped off of him. he fell and collapsed on his bed, then the tears came again until he managed to sleep.

house[]

when Spirit woke again, Lily's ring was the first thing he saw. it glittered beautifully in the bit of sun coming in through the door.

Lily.

getting up, Spirit tugged his sword belt from the globe. it fell over. he didn't care. his paw kicked something soft and he looked down. a tattered brown rabbit plushie that had been lying under the globe.

self concious, as if Lily was seeing the mess instead of just the small, worn black beads in the plushie's face, Spirit propped up the globe again.

suddenly he was thirsty. he glanced around the small house. no water bottles. with a groan, he navigated his way to the door, avoiding the books and paper scattered on the floor and nearly whacking his shoulder on the rusty, broken bicycle leaning against the wall instead.

it was a very grey, overcast day.

his lawn was overgrown and leaves from last last last autumn were scattered around. mushrooms grew near the edges of his yard and a broken, overturned pot near the path always gave him memories of the last time he was happy.

it made him feel worse every time he passed it, and always meant to get rid of it, but never could.

Spirit's yard

memories[]

so whatever we put in this pot.. will grow?

yes! any plant or flower.

then i want to grow... something blue.

why is that, spirit?

because it looks like you.

that's very sweet, little one, but are you sure you don't want lilly of the valleys? you said they were your favorite.

you're my favorite. .... they are the ones that look like bells, right?

yes, the white ones that look like bells.

i like white. and blue. like you. like the sky. can we plant both?

no, there's only room for one.

.. okay. we both like lilly of the valley, so let's plant that.

we need to paint the pot first, make it special.

green! and blue. like you. like the sky.

okay. hold still while i go get the paints, spirit.

communicate[]

Spirit went to crystal sands, Juniper's favorite place, and was surprised to see Lily there.

"Lily?"

the bunny looked over. "hello, Spirit."

i'm a terrible person. she doesn't want to talk to me. just leave. you don't deserve to even talk to her. she doesn't want to talk to m--

"come on over, i've got some fruit."

surprised, Spirit walked over and sat down across from the rabbit. there was an awkward silence.

then the wolf blurted out, "i'm sorry!"

Lily looked up, an orange between her paws. "for what?"

"you got me this ring and spent all your money and i didn--" Spirit gulped for breath, started to cry, then tried to continue. "i didn't even say thank you and all you wanted to do is make me happy but nothing has made be happy since Sk--" and he abruptly stopped.

Lily wiped his tears away. "it's okay. i forgive you."

Spirit looked up. "really?"

"yes. it doesn't matter whether you said thank you or not! it was a gift." she flicked an ear.

"i'm..... gonna go swim." Spirit got up, feeling as if he sat there a moment more he'd suffocate.

she stared at him.

"okay."

slides[]

Spirit splashed through the water, then started walking up the hill. he sat down near the tunnel to mt. shiveer and sighed.

"Spirit? is that you?"

"hi Juniper." Spirit sighed.

the lion pushed down his sunglasses and looked down at his friend. "what's wrong?"

Spirit and Juniper

"me," Spirit sighed, tears stinging his eyes.

get it together. you're pathetic.

"aw, come on. self esteem, man."

"i have depression."

Juniper didn't react to the jarring statement. he wrapped one massive paw around his friend's shoulder and flipped his sunglasses back down. "i already know that. but you seem extra down. what's up?"

"Lily hates me now."

"who?"

should i introduce them?

who am i kidding, they'll become best friends and leave me behind.

i deserve it.

they wouldn't do that....

what makes you so sure?

well if they become friends, they deserve it, at least. do it for them.

Spirit took a deep breath. "come on, i'll show you." he started to get up and go back down the hill.

the lion smiled and pulled his scrawny friend over to the slides, then pushed him down one.

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAA!"

juniper slid down the other slide with a grin on his face. "water's good for you, bro!" he splashed into the bottom before Spirit, who was frantically trying to climb the slide, but miserably failing. finally the grey wolf was thrown off the slide and landed ungracefully in a miserable heap in the water. juniper laughed and pulled Spirit up. "good for you!"

"BAD for me! i nearly died." Spirit crossed his paws and snorted out water from his nose and mouth.

both of the boys became aware of a pleasant, soft giggle coming from the shore. Spirit and Juniper both looked up at the same time.

damn it.

Lily waved at them, laughing under one paw at their antics. "hi, Spirit!"

Wavey wavey

Juniper waved back good-naturedly, his sunglasses skewed on his face. "ello!"

Spirit grumbled all the way to the beach and dragged himself onto the sand. it got stuck in his wet fur and he shook himself like a dog before sitting down near Lily.

"Lily, meet Juniper. Juniper, Lily."

"nice to meet you, Juniper!" Lily smiled at the lion, who was wringing out his mane on the sand.

"yeah... nice." it was impossible to tell if Juniper was looking at Lily under the sunglasses, but he quickly did the paw guns and then continued to wring water from his fur. "she doesn't seem to hate you," he whispered to Spirit.

"you're so lame, Juniper," he groaned.

"got more class than you," the lion retorted, amused. "least i got a lady."

"wait, what? since when?" the wolf looked up at his best friend.

Juniper snickered and looked over his sunglasses at Spirit. "since forever. you don't hear the news when you stay inside all day."

"oh, that's great!" Lily smiled. "what's her name?"

"Snowbreath; she's a sabertooth. you should meet her sometime." Juniper stretched on the sand and lay down calmly.

"who wants fruit? i've got grapes." Lily pulled out a bushel of grapes from her picnic basket and gave some to both the boys. Spirit ate tentatively. "thanks."

"no problem." Lily smiled at Spirit before putting the rest of the grapes away. the three lay on the beach in silence.

loneliness[]

Lily eventually got up and dusted sand from her fur. "i need to be heading back now!. It was fun meeting you here! bye!" she packed up her things, gave Spirit a smile, and left.

Juniper waved her goodbye. "i need to leave, too. Snowbreath. yeah. see you later, bro." the lion got up and padded in the other direction.

Spirit sat in the middle and felt like the world was vanishing under his friends' retreating paws.

he slowly walked home and collapsed in his bed.

and for a little while, he felt nothing bad.

when Spirit woke up, depressing loneliness and guilt instantly crushed him. he caught his breath and shut his eyes again, not wanting to deal with the day.

i slept until noon.

Spirit stared at the clock, not quite registering it.

oh well. time to eat brunch.

somehow, the wolf dragged himself out of bed and looked around.

dusty donuts lying in a box on the floor.

food.

***

after a very stale brunch with a donut still in his paws, he wandered into baloosh. it was a lovely day, sunny but not hot, with a fresh breeze blowing and not a crowd. Lily was there, with a smallish white sabertooth.

probably Snowbreath.

Lily saw him and instantly her face lit up. she was so pretty when she smiled.

and then she bounded over. "Spirit!"

okay. how do you talk to girls?

uhh, just trust your instincts.

Spirit took a bite of the donut and promptly choked on it.

Snowbreath started to giggle and Lily looked shocked.

instincts horrible. never trust me again, me.

finally he swallowed it and looked up. "hi."

"you okay? you looked so funny. i was just talking to Lily about the alphas." Snowbreath clumped Spirit extremely hard on the back.

"ow. i'm totally fine."

Lily giggled, though she still looked slightly concerned. "this is Snowbreath, Juniper's girl."

"i gathered. nice to meet you." the wolf and sabertooth shook paws.

a green paw slipped a pair of sunglasses onto Snowbreath and she and Juniper looked into eachother's shades. "yo."

the two cats nuzzled eachother. "where were you?"

"adventuring." Juniper smirked. "got enough gems to get you some shades like me."

"how thoughtful." Snowbreath purred. the two walked off, chatting softly.

Spirit sighed.

"you okay?" Lily asked softly, pink creeping below her fur.

"i'm happy for them. i just feel... isolated."

that instantly felt like a lift off his shoulders. just saying it.

"you don't have to." Lily wrapped her paws around his neck.

he froze. nobody had hugged him since—tears came fast and thick. Lily didn't leave until he had stopped crying, then stepped back.

"want me to walk you home?"

he could barely nod.

it was only until they were nearly home before he realised Lily would see his house.

too little too late.

he opened the gate and caught his breath at the pot before walking past the dead grass. mira, this was even more depressing than usual.

"you know, this isn't that bad. have you tried gardening to fix it up?"

gardening.

"yes," he managed to get out.

Lily held his paw and ushered him inside, quietly tidying up. she must have thought he wouldn't notice, but he did. so gently, Spirit scooped up a last-friendship-festival box of heart chocolates and shoved it into her paws before flopping onto his bed and falling asleep.

clear[]

when Spirit woke, Lily was dozing on a long-lost clover mat. sunlight was streaming through the door and the house looked cleaner.

Lily and Spirit

he slowly got up and carefully walked around, quiet and in awe.

Lily had done all this for him?

blurry[]

Spirit decided to leave Lily asleep, and walked out of his house down to Jamaa Township. as he passed the flowerpot, he felt the familiar pang of guilt, but the sun on his fur calmed him.

the animals in jamaa hollering for trades did not.

one of them was Snowbreath. oh!

he padded over to her. "hey, Snowbreath."

the sabertooth took a deep breath and looked down at Spirit. "Oh, hey, lil' dude. Looking for Juniper?"

he shook his head. "I'm taking a walk."

Snowbreath looked impressed. "Getting out of the house and waking up on time is really good for feeling better and getting energy back, you know. Recovery n' all that. You feelin' better?"

Spirit dug around inside himself. "not really. i feel pretty... bad. like usual."

"Ah, well. Can't happen all in one day." Snowbreath tossed him a set of headphones and a cap. "Here."

"what's this?"

"It's a present from Juniper n I! We saw the colours and thought of you, and besides, music always cheers me up! Try it."

Spirit's eyes watered. "i can't accept this."

"Not optional, kiddo." Snowbreath shoved the hat and headphones onto Spirit's head and gave him a thumb's up, then gave him a gentle push towards Sarepia Forest.

suddenly everything seemed blurry. the voices of the animals faded, and a pop song began to play, drowning out the loud and harsh outside world. he strolled quietly through the peaceful woods, listening to the tunes.

numb[]

the bad feeling went away with the music,

but so did everything else.

Spirit felt himself walk into the woods, up into the trees, and, subconsciously, towards coral canyons.

he stumbled on the wooden boards and didn't feel the bruise.

good.

the song rang in his ears but he didn't process the music or the words.

the hot, red stone under his paws was the only thing he registered.

and then air.

strangers[]

Spirit and berry soda

Spirit woke in the Kimbara animal hospital with a rhino looking down at him.

"What's yer name?"

he stared at her.

"Naaaame," she repeated.

"spirit," he wheezed.

"I'm Berry Punch. I saved you."

"what?"

"ya jumped off the coral canyons bridge, ya maniac."

"oh."

Berry Punch shook her head. "have any family?"

Spirit shook his head. "not.. not anymore."

"What about friends?"

Juniper and Snowbreath. and Lily. but they'd hate him after this. they'd be so angry. anxiety stole his breath. "i don't think so," he breathed.

Berry Punch sighed. "Ya seen the sun recently? Aside from when you left to go pull a maniac stunt?"

Spirit shrugged hopelessly.

"Okay, so yer a mess. Got it."

usually a comment like that made him cry. he wasn't sure why the straightforward rhino made him chuckle. maybe he was going insane.

"Okay, kid, where's yer house?"

"jamaa."

Berry Punch rolled her eyes. "Ya think we're not inside Jamaa right now, Spearmint?"

"it's, uh, spirit. uh, my house is in Jamaa Township."

"Great. Let's crash this dump." Berry Punch got off of her seat somewhat heavily and stomped down the stairs. Spirit tried to get up, but one leg collapsed beneath him.

"Oh, yeah, sorry. Yer mostly fine, but yer left leg'll be a bit weak..." Berry Punch lost her confident demeanor for a moment, faltered. "Ya... Ya landed on it."

limping, Spirit leaned on the rhino and they slowly made it down the stairs. "why would you help me? i'm a stranger."

"strangers need help just as much as anyone else."
